Neil Bartlett @ The British Library

More news from the inbox... Neil Bartlett has given his archive to the British Library. To celebrate, he'll be having a chat with Morrissey fan Amy Lame.

Bartlett is one of the key names in alternative theatre over the past thirty years in the UK. From his study of gay culture, Who Was That Man? to his piece at the National Theatre Or You Could Kiss Me, he has evolved a body of work that has mined content from outside the mainstream, despite getting an OBE in 2000 and becoming the artistic director of The Lyric in Hammersmith.

Part of his importance is in the way that his life has reflected the currents of LGBTQ history since the early 1980s. Back in the day, he was an activist against Clause 28, a small minded piece of legislation that tried to prevent "promotion" of certain sexualities. Now, the British Library is delighted to be able to house his video and writing archive. His early works were often solos, and he had to found his own company to present his work. By 2010, Handspring Puppet Theatre company were staging his plays on London's South Bank.
