Jules Verne’s Extraordinary Dramaturgies: Not Cricket @ Edfringe 2016

Acclaimed company, Not Cricket Productions return to the Fringe with a trilogy of classic Jules Verne adventures performed in a unique environment at C nova. Enter the world of Jules Verne’s Extraordinary Voyages

This trilogy of adventure stories is being performed in an installation space at C Nova and each is an innovative adaptation in the spirit of the original novel.

Jules Verne (1828 –1905) was a French novelist, poet, and playwright who is best remembered for his adventure novels and his profound and lasting influence on the science fiction genre.

What was the inspiration for this performance?
The inspiration to adapt Jules Verne's novels for stage came from himself; masterful storytelling is at the heart of his writing and we were captivated by his work. We felt inspired to spread his adventures to theatre audiences.

How did you go about gathering the team for it?
At Not Cricket Productions we have a core group of like-minded and multi-talented individuals who take part regularly in our productions in a variety of onstage and offstage roles With a handful of newcomers, this summer's selection of shows features many of the usual faces.

How did you become interested in making performance?
The same way that I imagine the vast majority of theatre-makers did - by seeing something that inspired us enough to want to do it ourselves.

Was your process typical of the way that you make a performance?
As this is our third year in a row of taking up a selection of shows in which we all participate, we have a routine of preparation and creation that we have found works for us. So in a word - yes.

What do you hope that the audience will experience?
We want them to experience high quality storytelling and be enthralled in what they see. We've never been pioneers of theatre that aims to change your life our your views, we're simply here to entertain.

What strategies did you consider towards shaping this audience experience?
Each story has been adapted individually by different members of our company. Each is unique and has called for a variety of different elements to enhance their storytelling. For the most part they have been stripped back - you won't find yourself in a naturalistic setting. But we've been determinedly creative; our shows collectively incorporate music, puppetry, original soundtracks and innovative uses of light.

Do you see your work within any particular tradition?
Yes, in that they are all adaptations. Each of our shows takes a classic tale many know and love and seeks to present it in an original and entertaining way.
