Behind our Dramaturgy: Sophie & Anne Bertreau @ Edfringe 2017

Behind Our Skin

from the 21st to the 26th of August from 6PM to 7PM.

Behind Our Skin is about how two very different women are dealing with immigration today, and the test and allies they face along the way: Camille a French women lives an easy life in London, and Nayssam, a muslim student in Paris, is faced with the difficulties of integrating into the French culture.

Camille has moved to London from France but never cared about committing to the society that welcomed her. Only when problems arise with her baby does she realise our interdependance.
Nayssam arrrived in Paris with a suitcase full of books and dreams but had to face the reality of immigration and the fears of French people - including those of her best friend Julie. Torn between her muslim heritage and her desire to fit into a new society (that views religion with suspicion), she faces cultural misunderstandings leading to dangerous situations

What was the inspiration for this performance?
The events that have shaken France recently (Bataclan, Nice), coupled with our own experience of immigration. We are two sisters who have lived away from our homeland, France, for years: in the US, the UK, HK, Madrid, Chile….  Our ‘easy’ experience of immigration, compared with the tales of our friends of Arab origins in France drove us to write Behind Our Skin.

Is performance still a good space for the public discussion of ideas?
We hope that people get interested in our stories and that it helps them see the world a little differently.

How did you become interested in making performance?
We have always made shows together when we were children. This is our second professional show together, after Contes Appollins, at Avignon Festival in 2014.

Is there any particular approach to the making of the show?
Our starting point was to tell two opposite stories on a similar topic - to show different realities.

Does the show fit with your usual productions?
Yes, we are very much a storytelling company.

What do you hope that the audience will experience?
We hope that they will be moved by how Nayssam & Julie, Camille & Neha do their best to interact and understand each other.
