Gold. Oil. Dramaturgy: Dane Baptiste @ Edfringe 2017

Dane Baptiste’s new stand up show ‘G.O.D’ will be at the Pleasance Courtyard Above at 9pm for the month of August for tickets go to www.edfringe.com

What was the inspiration for this performance?

After travelling the world and seeing how modern life, it’s apparent that the world is really divided by ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’. We all want heaven, but nobody comes back or sends postcards, so we’re all trying to find our own piece of heaven.

Is performance still a good space for the public discussion of ideas?

I think it’s best place, ideas are how we make our consciousness perceivable to other people. Existence really is down to a ideas, so why not discuss them?

How did you become interested in making performance?

Because I didn’t feel like there was anything else I could do for a living, and waiting for somebody else to give me what I want in life wasn’t going to happen.

Is there any particular approach to the making of the show?

Just get my jokes down; and get them right and then write, recite, rinse repeat until it’s on his feet.

Does the show fit with your usual productions?

This show will be stripped down; no gimmicks or breaks, just good comedy, just straight punchlines. I’m hoping to make an hour feel like 20 minutes.

What do you hope that the audience will experience?

Hopefully an exercise in hilarity which makes them realise that they are human beings, and not just humans.

What strategies did you consider towards shaping this audience experience?

Making the show as funny as possible. Laughter is the best medicine, so the sugar coating on this year’s pill will hopefully cause a comedy sugar coma
