I won't be making it up, unfortunately. The Edinburgh Fringe is like a black hole of life that sucks away money, however much fun it is! However I am considering a permanent move north of the border in the next few years, so it'd be much easier to see shows without the hefty price tag of travel and accommodation during August.

I enjoyed this quote: "I dig violent and provocative theatre. I am probably just jaded, and I don't like violence in real life. But theatre strikes me as just the place to work out some of the rougher bits of life, presenting experiences that won't resolve into my nice, middle-class fantasy vision of a liberal, loving society. Either that, or I get my cheapies off rough trade on the stage."
I've often wondered why people like to see productions that are quite violent or aggressive. Do you think it's because it's 'safe'? Because we, as an audience, know that the person isn't really being beaten, or shot, or hung, or whatever? That it allows us to remove ourselves from the situation because it's not real and we can watch objectively? Or is it more like Artaud's 'Theatre of Cruelty'? That we are immersed into the drama and can experience these emotions ourselves, still in a safe way, knowing that we ourselves are not at risk?
Thinking on it further (in typical, rambling, vomiting-words-onto-the-screen style) what about news reports? We can watch violent scenes on the news and not be moved to cry, but weep like a baby at a drama depicting maybe the same situation?

Well, that train of thought made sense... :/
xxDani Zebrowskahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14840804089567029020noreply@blogger.com
